 Memoir of the Survey of Travancore & Cochin States Vol: II

Vol : II of the "Geographical and Statistical Memoir of the Survey of the Travancore and Cochin States" was executed under the Superintendence of Lieutants Ward and Conner from July 1816 to the end of the year 1820. It has enriched the topographical and geographical knowledge of Travancore and Cochin regions. It served the purpose of a Gazetteer, a Census document and a socio-economic survey of the society.
This volume is comprised of two parts. The first part deals with the survey of Travancore and the second part with the Cochin Survey. The first part was first published in 1901 and second part in 1893 by the Madras Government.
The authors of the survey had taken meticulous care in recording their observations. The descriptive memoir of each district is prepared according to a uniform pattern under different heads. It gives a detailed description of the situation, extent, divisions & sub-divisions, rivers, mountains and hills, woods and jungles, agraharams of Bramins, cattles and animals, remarkable buildings, mines, minerals and manufacturers, roads and passes; soil and produce etc. of each district. A significant feature of the memoir is the incorporation of a description about the important places of every district. The tables prepared and appended to each district survey resemble the census table of the modern period.

 It was with great difficulty that Lts. Ward &Conner had succeeded in making the detailed survey of the regions. Though it is considered as a joint work by Lts. Ward & Conner it can be seen that the descriptive account of the Memoir of the Travancore was almost entirely written by Lt. Ward. But in the case of Cochin the descriptive accounts were incorporated by Lt. Conner.

The present volume is published with a brief biographical sketch about its authors Lts. Ward & Conner. Every possible care has been taken to bring out a faithful reproduction of the original.
