PREFACE
The present volume is the third in the four-volume State Gazetteer Project undertaken by the Gazetteers Department, Government of Kerala. Vol. I and Part-I of vol. II have already been published. The present volume consists of Chapters IV to VIII in the scheme drawn up by the Gazetteer of India Unit for the State Gazetteers, including Agriculture and Irrigation. Industries, Banking, Trade & Commerce, Communications and Economic Trends.
The material presented in this Volume was compiled by 1985-86 and was sent to Press by the end of 1987. Although effort has been made to bring the information presented here up-to-date, some lacunae may still remain. The procedure adopted in this Volume is to present the available information on the economy of Kerala, along with the functioning of the various Government. Departments and institutions in a systematic manner. The Volume will serve as a useful reference book for all those involved in the planning and administration of economic activity in Kerala, and those who are interested in various economic activities.
This volume is being brought out when the VIII Plan discussions are under way. In order to plan for the future, it will be useful to have an overview of the performance of the State in various fields, which should be evaluated and proper conclusions drawn. This volume is not intended as a comprehensive evaluative exercise, and we will be happy if this volume inspires concerned administrators and laymen to do more probing and come out with illuminating suggestions on the future course of our economy.
